Located in Seattle, WA, this project explored basic concepts of retail design. Our studio was assigned a shipping container to use as a place of retail, a coffee shop and retail space. Due to the limitations of the size of the shipping container, it was a challenge to provide adequate needs for the kitchen and coffee storage, while maintaining seating for the public, and following ADA codes. I personally came up with the original name for the coffer shop; Deja Brew. It is meant to be a synopsis of Deja Vu which is known for having a repetitive effect; a recollection of something familiar. Coffee is a regular drink for people on a daily basis, and due to the notion of the need for caffeine, Deja Brew is the perfect place to recharge and repeatedly visit. The cafe will have a neutral tone color palette, similar to the shades in coffee, while having plants in the space as the accents colors which can refer to Seattle’s landscape. Natural materials will also be used in the space such as wood and concrete countertops to give an omen to its surroundings. The overall concept of this shipping container cafe is to provide a space that has natural materials, and is centered on the theme of deja vu; a feeling of familiarity, which for coffee lovers will be a wonderful place to gather and revisit regularly.
